NO PERMANENT REGIONAL BENCHES OF SUPREME COURT

The Full Court of the Supreme Court of India at a meeting on April 30, 2001 has opposed unanimously the setting up of Permanent Benches of the apex court outside Delhi. This followed representations received from various sources as also the recommendations of the Standing Committee of Parliament on Home Affairs proposing setting up of Permanent Benches of the Supreme Court outside Delhi. The Government had referred the matter to the Chief Justice of India for consideration. Earlier on December 15, 1999 the Full Court of the Supreme Court of India had rejected a proposal based on the recommendations of the Standing Committee of Parliament referred to it by the Government for setting up of Permanent Regional Benches of the Supreme Court.

Article 130 of the Constitution of India provides that the Supreme Court shall sit in Delhi or in such other place or places as the Chief Justice of India may, in consultation with the President, from time to time, appoint.
