BIS QUALITY AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED ON APRIL 24

The prestigious Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Awards, for the year 2000 will be presented by Shri Shanta Kumar, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution at New Delhi on April 24, 2002. These awards have been instituted by the Bureau of Indian Standards to promote quality in the country.

The RGNQ Awards have been designed by BIS to be in line with similar awards of advanced countries like the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, USA; Deming Prize in Japan and the European Quality Award. It is based on the Total Quality Management model. The writers are selected by the National Awards Committee chaired by the Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs.

The scheme provides four separate awards for large scale manufacturing units, small scale manufacturing units, service sector and the BEST OF ALL Award; Commendation Certificates are presented to small and large units in different sectors like Metallurgical, Electrical, Electronics,Chemicals, Food, Drugs and Textile. These commendation certificate are meant to recognise organization’s efforts/ achievements and are not exactly at par with the four main awards which are given for achieving high excellence. In the event of non-availability of suitable applicant organizations as per assessment criteria decided by the National Awards Committee (NAC), any of the above awards/commendation certificates may not be given.
