The first World
Science Festival and an international meet to mark the Golden
Jubilee of DNA Double Helix discovery opens here tomorrow. It
was in 1953 James Watson and Francis Crick discovered the Double
Helix structure of the DNA. This path-breaking event brought
about a revolution in the field of modern biology and biotechnology.
The Minister for Human Resource Development and Science &
Technology Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi will inaugurate the three-day
festival. The Golden Jubilee of DNA discovery is being observed
all over the world throughout 2003.
The Centre for
Philosophy and Foundation of Science (CPFS) in collaboration
with the Departments of Biotechnology (DBT) and Science &
Technology (DST) is organising the Science Festival. The aim
is to convey the excitement and promise of developments at the
frontiers of science to public and young scientists and students.
The Theme is "What is Life". The Theme Summit of the Festival
would address the issues of science, philosophy, social justice,
culture and ethics.
The first International
Dialogue being held to mark the occasion would focus on the
DNA, genes and the role and relevance of these innovations for
human welfare. In addition to the main symposium, satellite
symposia are being held in Pune, Hyderabad and Kolkata.
