ONGOING PROJECTS OF RAILWAYS
There are 233 railway
projects in progress as on April 1, 2003 all over the country.
The projects include new lines, doubling, rail bridges, railway
electrification, metropolitan transport projects in Chennai and
Mumbai and Metro Rail, Kolkata. The estimated cost of these projects
is Rs.22,125 crores.
There are 10 projects
in Central Railway followed by 22 projects in Eastern Railway,
23 in East Central Railway, 16 in East Coast Railway, 14 in Northern
Railway, 12 in North Central Railway, six in North Eastern Railway,
13 in Northeast Frontier Railway, 10 in North Western Railway,
22 in Southern Railway, 20 in South Central Railway, eight in
South Eastern Railway, six in South East Central Railway, 14 in
South Western Railway, 10 in Western Railway, one in West Central
Railway, 13 railway electrification projects, four metropolitan
transport projects in Mumbai, two metropolitan transport projects
in Chennai and two metro railway projects at Kolkata
When completed, these
projects will augment rail services in bulk transportation of
people and freight.
