SEMINAR ON ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE
Smt. Jayawanti Mehta,
Minister of State for Power, has said that the Government is serious
about tackling the problem of climate change. Government on India
has already initiated measures that have significant Green House
gases mitigation impacts which include promotion of energy efficient
technologies, harnessing of enormous potential of the renewable
sources of energy such as hydro and wind energy, energy conservation
measure etc. Smt. Mehta was speaking at a one-day National Dissemination
Seminar on Asian Regional Research Programme in Energy, Environment
and Climate, which she inaugurated here today. Renewable sources
of energy have emerged as a viable option to achieve the goal
of sustainable development in our country. Government of India
is promoting various technologies like wind, solar, cogeneration
and biogas plants. Such measures are essential even otherwise
to make Indian industry globally competitive, to reduce production
costs and to preserve the precious fossil fuels.
Central Electricity
Authority (CEA) was attended by engineers, academicians and policy
makers from Ministry of Power and other Ministries, Central and
State Electricity Regulatory bodies, Research Organisations, Educational
Institutions, Central Public Sector Undertakings and NGOs. The
seminar disseminated the findings of the Studies on mitigation
of Green House Gas and environment emission in the fields of Power,
Urban Transport, Biomass and Small & Medium Industries. The
studies reveal that hydro and combine cycle gas turbines are the
least cost options considering the emission constraints, biomass
integrated gasification combined cycle are most promising Clean
Development Mechanism option and introduction of Decentralised
Power Generation would reduce capacity addition and optimise capacity
utilisation. This would help policy makers and stake holders to
take into account the findings of the research work and to take
appropriate steps to reduce pollution and Green House Gas emission.
