CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR APRIL,
2003 (BASE 1984-85=100)
The All-India Consumer
Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees [CPI(UNME)], on base
1984-85=100, for the month of April, 2003 has been released by
the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics
& Programme Implementation; together with the indices for
59 selected urban centres in India. The All-India CPI (UNME) for
April, 2003 is 413, which is 3 points more than the index for
the month of March, 2003. At the major group level, the index
in April, 2003 when compared to last month that is March, 2003
has increased by 1.26% in the case of "Food, Beverages &
Tobacco." and 0.86% in case of "Fuel & Lights".
At the sub-group level, the index for "Vegetables" has
increased by 8.29% while that for "Fruits" has increased
by 4.34%. However, the index for "Condiments & Spices"
has decreased by 0.44%. With the corresponding All-India index
for April, 2002 being 396, the index for the month of April, 2003
has shown a rise of 4.3 percent over a year.
Statement-1
gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres
in the country, for April, 2003; together with the indices for
the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for April, 2003 in respect
of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding
indices for the previous month and also for April, 2002 are given

Statement-2
gives a comparison of CPI(UNME) for April, 2003 in respect of
59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding
month of last year, namely April, 2002. Percentage change in the
index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may
be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges
from -0.5 to 11.0 percent; with the largest increase being in
the case of Mangalore and the least in the case of Asansol. The
increases are less than 0.0 percent for 1 centre, 0.1 to 2.0 percent
for 1 centre, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 17 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent
for 33 centres, 6.1 to 8.0 percent for 5 centres, 8.1 to 10.0
percent for 1 centre and more than 10.0 percent for 1 centre.
As many as 22 centres have lower annual percentage increase as
compared to that of the All-India figure of 4.3 percent while
36 centres have recorded a higher percentage increase as compared
to the All-India average whereas 1 centre has the same percentage
increase as that of All-India figure.
