RAILWAY BOARD GETS POWERS OF CENTRAL
GOVERNMENT
The Government has
issued a notification conferring all the powers and functions
of the Central Government on the Railway Board.
The notification
has been issued under sub-Section (1) of Section 89 of the Railways
Act, 1989 investing the Railway Board with all the powers and
functions of the Central Government.
The Railway Board
comprises a Chairman and six other Members, Member Mechanical,
Member Engineering, Member Traffic, Member Electrical, Member
Staff, and Financial Commissioner. All the Members are in the
rank and pay of Secretary to the Government of India, with Chairman
being Principal Secretary to the Government of India.
There is also an
Expanded Board comprising the existing Railway Board Members and
Expenditure Secretary, Finance Ministry and Secretary, Planning
Commission to consider and okay Railway projects of Rs.50 crores
and above before their approval by the Cabinet Committee on Economic
Affairs (CCEA).
