SUBSTANTIAL GROWTH IN EXPORT OF COIR
PRODUCTS
The export of coir
and coir products has registered substantial growth during the
first half of the year 2002-03. Upto September 2002, India exported
40,848 MTs of coir and coir products valued at Rs. 179.27 crores
as against the target of Rs. 405 crores fixed for the year 2002-03.
The export during the year 2001-02 was 71,334.81 MTs valued at
Rs. 320.58 crores as against 67,493.08 MTs valued at Rs. 313.66
crores during the year 2000-01. The preference of natural and
eco-friendly product has improved market for coir in the international
market. If this trend continues, the target fixed for the export
of coir and coir products for the year 2002-03 can be achieved.
An exploratory delegation
led by Secretary, Ministry of SSI & ARI, Government of India
and consisting of Chairman, Coir Board and exporters of coir visited
Brazil, Chile, Panama and New York (USA) from 19th
to 29th May, 2002. For supporting the industry market
intelligence, studies are organised in India and abroad for assessing
the market potential of coir and coir products and its competitiveness
products.
