SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN EXPORT OF CHEMICALS AND PETROCHEMICALS

During April 2002 – January 2003, there has been export of Rs. 164.65 crore of man-made staple fibre comprising of PSF (Polyester Staple Fibre), VSF (Viscose Staple Fibre), PPSF (Polypropylene Staple Fibre), ASF (Acrylic Staple Fibre) as against Rs. 93.14 crore during the corresponding period 2001-02 i.e. an increase of 76.8 per cent over the previous year. This high growth rate has been achieved mainly due to export of these products to new markets in Malaysia, Portugal, Indonesia, UK, Nigeria, France, Canada, Iraq and Japan etc. and substantial increase of export to China, Japan, Mexico, Germany, UAE and Singapore. China is emerging as an important importer of man-made fibre from India. Export of Polyester Staple Fibre to china increased by 473 per cent during the period.

In case of Inorganic/Organic/Agro Chemicals, a substantial increase of 26.4 per cent i.e. from Rs. 3163 crore to Rs. 3963 crore was observed during the period April, 02 – Jan., 03 over April, 01 – Jan., 02.

Drugs, pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals also maintained high growth rate of 21.3 per cent during this period. Similarly, growth rate in export of dyes/intermediates and coal-tar chemicals was 25 per cent.

Stability in policy, export promotion efforts, emphasis on quality and cost competitiveness provided necessary boost for exports. Value addition, particularly in petrochemicals continues to be the main strategy for enhancing exports.
