UPTO RS 5 LAKHS SANCTIONED TO VIRAAT BADHWAR BY MINISTRY OF YOUTH
AFFAIRS & SPORTS
The Ministry of
Youth Affairs and Sports has sanctioned an assistance of upto
Rs. 5 lakhs to Mr. Viraat Badhwar, the child golf prodigy. The
assistance to the under 10 age golfer has been sanctioned under
`Scheme relating to the Talent Search and Training’, under which
a package of upto Rs. 5 lakhs is provided to promising sports
persons. He will undergo six weeks training at David Leadbetter
Golf Academy, Florida (USA).
Mr. Viraat Badhwar
had met the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Vikram
Verma, in September, 2003. In that meeting Shri Vikram Verma had
assured that all facilities for training and assistance would
be provided to him so that he can continue his award giving performance.
This sanction follows that assurance given to young Viraat Bhadwar.
Under the scheme
relating to Talent Search and Training, assistance is given to
promising sports persons for training and participation in international
event abroad, procurement of equipment, scientific support and
training and participation in tournaments in India. Promising
sports persons include national record holder or Gold Medallist
of last National championships or medallists of International
events.
Viraat Bahdwar created
history by winning second position in under 8 category of the
World Junior Golf Championship in USA. In addition to the World
Junior Golf Championship, he also won the first position in Junior/Sub
Junior (IGU Categorized Tournament) at Jaypee Greens Resort in
May, 2003. He has featured in the Limca Book of Records 2003 as
the youngest golfer in India to do a hole in one. Viraat, who
has won major national tournaments since he started playing at
the age of 4, has a present certified USGA Handicap of nine.
