- COMPUTER NETWORK IN PIB
At Head Quarters in Delhi , all the officers
and staff of the Bureau are well equipped with necessary computer
hardware, software and skills. All the PCs are on Local Area
Network (LAN) and Internet. Special services like over 25 daily
newspapers in digital form (in CDs) and informative CDs like
Encyclopedia are available to them on LAN.
The PIB Head Quarters in Delhi is linked with
all 8 Regional and 30 of its Branch Offices over the computer
network. They have the essential IT infrastructure facility
set up to take care of their publicity related needs. The Bureau
sends Press releases, Press notes, Features, photographs and
other publicity material to these Regional and Branch Offices
through the computer network.
- NEWS PAPERS ON LAN
Through its Press Clipping Unit, the Bureau
is getting scanned over 20 English and Hindi dailies everyday
for providing accesses to its officers to these newspapers on
LAN for making clippings for their respective ministers and
other top level officers.
- WEB SITE OF PIB
PIB has its own Web site. This makes publicity
material available for international consumption without sending
it physically. The site is updated throughout the day every
day with latest publicity material like press releases, backgrounders,
info nuggets and features in Hindi, English and Urdu along with
photographs covering daily functions of PM and other ministers
and ministries.
The Accreditation Index distributed by the
Bureau to all accredited media persons and various publicity
departments of the governments is now available on the web site
with key word search facility, which is a great help for the
user.
Recently, PIB has launch a dynamic, interactive
and exhaustive Electronic Databank on its web site. A unique
and very useful feature of this data bank is personalised PIB
subscription facility that keeps one up-to-date with what is
happening in his/her field of interest, via email. Users may
subscribe to the site and avail of regular updates on all releases,
background material and even photographs on the chosen topics
to be sent to their personal e-mail boxes.
- PHOTO TRANSMISSION BY NET
PIB HQs and all of its Regional and Branch
Offices have the installation of appropriate computers and laser
printers and scanners for photo-transmission/duplication services,
which enables fast transmission and receipt of photographs.
- COMPUTERISED FAX USAGE
The Press releases are also faxed through computers
to local news papers as well as all resident-correspondents
of the important outstation news papers.
- INTERNET CONNECTIVITY
All the Regional and Branch Offices and the
HQs have Internet facility through VSNL, MTNL, DoT or NIC.
Of special mention here are two areas - the
disturbed and strategically important states of J&K and
North- East with the added disadvantage of these being hilly
and difficult terrains for which V-SATs have been provided recently
in Guwahati and Srinagar for directly accessing internet round
the clock.
- VIDEO CONFERENCING SYSTEM
PIB is connected to some of its Regional and
Branch Offices by Video Conferencing system through NIC's studios.
This enables media persons at these regional centres to participate
in Press Conferences going on in New Delhi as well as in other
parts of the country without being physically present there.
- ELECTION INFORMATION SYSTEM
The Elections Results Information system enabled
PIB to update Loksabha election results online as and when data
was received from Regional and Branch Offices through computer
network.
- APPLICATION OF GIS (GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM)
The use of GIS (Geographic Information System)
software enabled the release of maps for various phases of Elections
as well as the display of Election results in map format, accessible
through internet, at PIB Web site.
- INTERNET JOURNALISM
Some of the Regional Offices had organised
training programmes on internet and internet journalism for
local journalists. Other R/B Offices are also planning such
training programmes.
A workshop on 'Media Relationships In
The Internet Driven Age' was organized on April
5-6th, 2005 to sensitize the DPO's to incorporate various facets
of Internet Journalism in their sphere of activities.
