GOLDEN PEACOCK AWARD FOR ASIAN COMPETITION SECTION OF IFFI SHARED BY A JAPANESE AND AN INDIAN FILM

CLOSING CEREMONY OF IFFI, 2000 HELD

          The Jury for the Asian Competition of IFFI, 2000 announced the names of award winners from this Section of IFFI here today. The Award for the best film by an Asian Director is being shared by Mr. Yasho Furuhata for his film 'POPPAYA - The Rail Road Man' (Japan) and Mr. Jayaraaj, for his film 'Karunam' (India). The award carries a Golden Peacock and Rs. 2,50,000 each to both the award winners. The Most Promising Asian Director award goes to Mr. Nonzee Nimibutr for his film 'Nang Nak' (Thailand). The award winner receives a Silver Peacock and cash prize of Rs. 2,50,000. Recipient of this year's Special Jury Award is Mr. Huo Jianqi for his film 'Postmen in the Mountains' (China). This award also carries one Silver Peacock and Rs. 2,50,000 in cash. Mr. Amos Gitai (Israel) has been selected for Special Mention Award by the Jury (Certificate only) for his film 'Khadosh'.

       The Jury for the Asian Competition Section of IFFI, 2000 consisted of Mr. Mrinal Sen, Chairperson; Mr. Abbas Kiarostami, Member; Mr. Jean Claude Cariere, Member; Mr. Joao Batista De Andrade, Member and Ms. Joan Dupont, Member.

          The Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shri Arun Jaitley gave away the Life Time Achievement Award to eminent Sri Lankan Film Director Lester James Peries for outstanding contribution to the cause of cinema. The Life Time Achievement Award consists of a Golden Peacock, a Shawl and a Scroll of Honour.

         Present on the occasion was also Smt. Shiela Dikshit, Chief Minister, National Capital Region of Delhi, Mr. Fernando E. Solanas and Ms. Angela Correa, the Director and the Actresses of the closing film 'The Cloud' apart from the Chairperson and Members of distinguished Jury of the competition section of Asian Directors and delegates from India and Abroad.
