FEATURE FILM: KARUNAM ( Pathos) 78 mins., 35 mm., col., Malayalam Chechamma and Chackochan seemed to be an ideal couple. However as their sons grow up they become estranged from their parents and leave home. Only Pakkaran, a young rubber tree tapper seemed to have the time and affection for them and he becomes a surrogate son to the ageing couple. This drab routine is broken when they are told to shift to a home for the aged which is being run by the clergy.However, circumstances in the peoples home are not conducive to a peaceful life and Chackochan passes away. Chechamma waits in vain for his children to return for their fathers funeral. A chance meeting with young Pakkaran seems to resolve Chechammas problems. He takes her to his poverty-stricken home. Chechamma flees from this refuge ending up in a home for the mentally retarded children. There she is happy once again, thanks to the love and affection given to her by the innocent inmates of the home. DIRECTOR: JAYARAJ In 1996 he burst upon the national film scene when Desadanam, won three National Film Awards, including the award for Direction. Then Kaliyattam won National Awards for Direction and for the Best Actor (Suresh Gopi). The film was selected for the Indian Panorama 1998, and along with Desadanam has been screened at several international film festivals.
