Synopsis  (Country : Japan)

Kanzo Sensei

130 mins/1998

A village by the sea on a Japanese island, 1945.  These are tense times: the eve of Japan’s surrender to the Allies.
Dr Akagi, the local doctor whose glucose supply is running out, attempts to salvage his professional dignity by finding a cure for hepatitis that is the main cause of death in his village.  He avails himself of the assistance of  his buddies, a ribald monk and a nihilistic morphine-  addicted surgeon.  His nurse is a wild and naïve young girl who sometimes makes money as a prostitute since she has to look after her family.  She loves the unusual doctor. There’s also a Dutch prisoner of war who has escaped from a nearby camp.  All unite in effort to build a microscope that will be powerful enough to identify the fatal virus...and are willing to go to any lengths for it.

Shohei Imamura, the internationally renowned film director, won the Palme d’Or at Cannes twice, in 1983 for The Ballad of Narayama and in 1997 for The Eel. In Kanzo Sensei he clothes the plot with local types and universal values and with his familiar visual momentum, and impressive period settings, presents a plot that flows to the rhythm of a jazz soundtrack.
