Synopsis  (Country : France/Switzerland)

Swindle (Rien Ne Va Plus)

105 mins/1997

Victor, 60, and Betty, half his age, are an ill-matched pair with an ambiguous relationship. They live off small-time swindling, catching wealthy professionals unawares at conventions in various parts of France. Betty’s charm seems to work and Victor ensures they never overreach themselves.

Then one day Betty meets the distinguished Maurice who says he is a Swiss banker. Discouraged by the lack of success at a dental convention, Betty latches on to Maurice in the hope of making five million Swiss francs. Soon Betty and Maurice are off to the Caribbean with the money strapped to Betty’s wrist. Victor, not far behind, outsmarts Maurice and walks off with both money and the girl.

But things take an unexpected turn when a vicious mob boss, with a definite weakness for opera, abducts the couple and demands the money back. When everyone has lost his sense of humour, can Betty and Victor keep up their spirits and save their skins?

Claude Chabrol, 68, internationally respected film director of the French New Wave of the 50s, has continued to direct and write films for four decades. His admiration for the Hitchcock thriller style, evident in some of his own films, his interest in a curiously detached exploration of personal relationships and his critique of the French petite bourgeoisie, are all well known. Rien ne va Plus is Chabrol’s fiftieth film.
