In winter, human activity is dictated by nature. Theo, a farmer who is almost bankrupt, is taking his horse along a snow-covered road to the vet. His young daughter is hiding in the trailer. Rene has just stolen a car and is speeding down the same road. An accident is inevitable and the daughter is not going to survive. The stolen car belonged to Marco, the boyfriend of Laura, who lives with Rebecca, the nurse looking after Theos daughter.
In the evenings, Laura works in a bar, where she meets Rene. Everything comes full circle. The lives of two couples and an old man in search of truth cross paths in the cold winter setting of a small mountain village.

Heino Erch, Ulrich Matthes, Floriane Daniel, Marie-Lou SeliemTom Tykwer, born in 1965, worked as a production assistant, script reader and assistant director before he made his first feature, Deadly Maria (1993) which was given the award for the best feature film by the German Film Critics Association. His other films include Friday Afternoon (1986), Because (1990) and Lola Runs (1998).
