1950, in a small Korean village, where one feels the reverberations of the conflicts of the distant Korean war. Sung Min and his best friend Chang Hee spend their time chasing after US military jeeps and catching the sweets the soldiers toss to them. They discover an old abandoned mill where they spy on US soldiers meeting local village women turned prostitutes. Chang Hees family is forced by economic circumstances to live off Sung Mins family while they await the return of Chang Hees father, who has been dragged off by North Korean soldiers. One day, the two boys return to the mill where they witness Chang Hees mother having sex with a GI, while Sung Mins father stands guard outside. Devastated and unable to deal with the revelation, Chang Hee disappears without so much as a word to Sung Min. And a mysterious fire burns down the mill.
