Spring in My Hometown

121 mins, 1998

1950, in a small Korean village, where one feels the reverberations of the conflicts of the distant Korean war. Sung Min and his best friend Chang Hee spend their time chasing after US military jeeps and catching the sweets the soldiers toss to them. They discover an old abandoned mill where they spy on US soldiers meeting local village women turned prostitutes. Chang Hee’s family is forced by economic circumstances to live off Sung Min’s family while they await the return of Chang Hee’s father, who has been dragged off by North Korean soldiers. One day, the two boys return to the mill where they witness Chang Hee’s mother having sex with a GI, while Sung Min’s father stands guard outside. Devastated and unable to deal with the revelation, Chang Hee disappears without so much as a word to Sung Min. And a mysterious fire burns down the mill. A year later, an unidentifiable body of a boy around Chang Hee’s age is found in a nearby swamp…
