Taxman

All Benjamin, a New York State tax investigator, infiltrates the Russian immigrant community in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. On the surface, Al is tracking down a mysterious confidence man who is clandestinely operating a multi-million dollar gasoline tax fraud. But underneath, much like Miguel Cervantes’ dysfunctional hero, Don Quixote, Al is seeking toi reinvent and redeem himself from the middle class wasteland of his life.

Avi Nesher realised that, to make films in the US with the freedom he had enjoyed in Israel, he had to find a way to do things on his own. He managed to start his own company and began to produce what became a series of successful gangster pictures. When the company had been successful enough he shut it down, picked up the profits and moved to New York to make Taxman independently. His next feature, Lowlife, has also been shot in New York..
