10,000 MW OF POWER FROM NUCLEAR SOURCE BY 2007
India is going ahead
in harnessing nuclear power for development with fully indigenous
know-how. As a clean energy it would properly supplement the conventional
sources of power in the future leading to a better quality of
life. The Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Dr Anil Kakodkar,
said this in an interview with PIB Special Services, New Delhi.
Speaking in Mumbai he expressed confidence that the country will
achieve the target of generating 10,000 MW of nuclear power during
the current Plan period. Presently, India generates 2700 MW of
atomic energy. New technologies are being developed from thorium
which is found in the country in abundance.
Dr Kakodkar said
energy is the engine of growth. It multiplies human labour and
increases productivity in agriculture, industry and services.
Hence easier access to energy in the developing countries holds
the key to bridging the widening inequality vis-à-vis the
advanced nations. The imbalance in growth can be corrected only
if the energy supply becomes plentiful and within the reach of
all. The power of atom can realise this, said Dr Kakodkar.
